Person Centred Planning PCP Training CoursePCP as it is commonly referred to as is an approach for organisations providing care for individuals with learning difficulties’, dementia & or mental health issues. The minimum that an individual would have is a care plan detailing their daily requirements such as lifting techniques, personal care requirements, medication and similar items.

PCP goes a bit deeper; it's collating everything in the person’s life from how they like their coffee to how they like to go to bed. You and I communicate to a visitor etc if we would like tea, coffee, milk, sugar, weak, strong etc. What if one day you could not do that as a result of a medical condition, an accident etc how would the people looking after you know what you liked and how you liked things done?.

The answer is they would give you just anything, your response would probably be to throw it back at them, you are then labeled as having 'challenging behaviour' then the cycle start again with the next task - how you like to be dressed, what you want to wear, they choose because you can't or can't communicate your thoughts, you don't feel comfortable, you don't like what they have chosen, you lash out, you struggle and the cycle goes on.

PCP training gives staff strategies for collecting the information on every task or event in your life, tips on how to communicate, how to put a PCP plan together and how to monitor, review and amend details.

The ultimate aim being to reduce challenging behaviours. As you can see its very involved. Wouldn't it be good if we all did one of these for ourselves so if anything were to happen its already on paper!
